PSYCHOLOGY LECTURER, PROFESSOR A.M. SUNMOLA TO DELIVER 625TH INAUGURAL LECTURE ON INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA

The University of Ibadan is set to host its 625th Inaugural Lecture, to be delivered by Professor A. M. Sunmola of the Department of Psychology, Faculty of the Social Sciences.

The lecture, titled “Intimate Partner Violence in Nigeria: Beyond Tolerance, Beyond Silence,” is expected to examine the growing concern of intimate partner violence in Nigeria and the need to move beyond societal tolerance and silence surrounding the issue.

As an inaugural lecture, the event provides an opportunity for Professor Sunmola to share scholarly insights drawn from years of academic research and professional engagement, particularly within the field of psychology. The lecture is expected to shed light on the psychological and social dimensions of intimate partner violence, while encouraging greater awareness and informed responses to the problem.

The lecture is scheduled to be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, by 3:00 p.m.

The event is being organised on behalf of the Faculty of the Social Sciences, with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor K. O. Adebowale, FAS, mni, inviting members of the general public to the lecture.

The lecture is expected to attract members of the university community, academics, students, professionals, and other members of the public interested in understanding the complexities surrounding intimate partner violence in Nigeria.

For students, particularly those in the Department of Psychology and other social science disciplines, the lecture presents an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge from an experienced scholar and deepen their understanding of an important social and psychological issue.

With its emphasis on moving “Beyond Tolerance, Beyond Silence,” the lecture is positioned not only as an academic discourse but also as a call for greater awareness, reflection, and meaningful action towards addressing intimate partner violence in Nigeria.
