Choose Wisely, Stay Honest: Prof. Ehigie Urges Fresh Social Sciences Students

The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ibadan, on April 7th, 2026, opened its doors to new students while celebrating academic excellence at the Dean’s Roll of Honour and Freshers' Welcome.


Addressing the students, Prof. P.O. Ehigie stressed the importance of integrity, cautioning against academic dishonesty and the influence of negative peer associations. He also reminded students, particularly women, to prioritize personal safety while navigating university life.


The event, which began at 11:20am, at the Faculty's Large Lecture Theatre, with the national anthem and formal acknowledgment of guests, highlighted the faculty’s unique focus on society and human behavior. The Dean emphasized character and learning as core values and urged students to make wise choices in friendships and associations.


Students were also briefed on the course registration process. Initial registration is scheduled for six weeks, ending on April 16, with an additional two weeks allocated for correcting any registration errors, tips on effective time management from the Sub-Dean were also given.


A session on gender policy and sexual harassment delivered by Prof. Olufunmilola Ajani, Director GMO, UI reinforced the university’s commitment to a safe and inclusive environment.


Dr. Stephen Lafenwa encouraged students to aim for holistic development, balancing academics, wellness, and extracurricular activities, advising them to “read well, relate well, eat well, dress well, and rest well.”

The programme concluded with the presentation of awards to the first-class students, and the vote of thanks by the Faculty's Staff Adviser.
