Overview of Clash of The Socials 5.0: The Nexus of Religion and Politics

The Faculty of The Social Sciences' Literary and Debating Society held the fifth edition of her annual oratory and debate competition “Clash of The Socials” on Saturday, 14th June, 2025. Since its launch, the event has grown into a big part of the faculty calendar.

The event was held at the faculty’s large lecture theatre. It was scheduled to kick off at exactly 10am, however, the weather took a turn and the event was delayed. In attendance were invited guests from TLDS-UI, Awo L&D, Kuti L&D, members of the faculty, and students from across the University of Ibadan.  Present at the event were three judges and a timekeeper, who graded the contestants' performance.

The event proceeded with the National Anthem and the University of Ibadan Anthem, followed by an opening speech from the Faculty’s L&D President, Yusuf Zainab. Her address set the tone for what would become a thrilling showcase of talent.

Newly recruited members of the Faculty’s Literary & Debating(L&D) society kicked off with oratory speeches. Each speaker gave their speeches with different expressions.

The highlight of the event was the debate round between departments under the Faculty. Four departments—Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

In the first round, Geography clashed with Political Science, while Psychology faced off against Sociology.

After two rounds of strong arguments and sharp rebuttals, Political Science and Psychology emerged as the winner of the rounds.

To break the tie between the two winners, an impromptu speech was introduced. In the end, Political Science came out on top, earning them the title of Clash of Socials 5.0 Champions.

Beyond the departmental win, individual talents also got the spotlight.

The Rookie of the Year award was given to Anuoluwapo Suzie from the Department of Sociology, 200 level.

The award for the Overall Best Speaker Debate Category  went to Legbo Comfort Amina of Psychology, also a 200-level student.

All rookie orators and debaters received certificates of participation, a gesture that encouraged them to keep going.

The judges took time to share their observations and feedback. They praised the effort put in by all participants and reminded everyone that greatness doesn’t come overnight. They encouraged all speakers to keep working on their craft.

One of the judges made a remark that stood out: “If the Faculty hopes to keep its Jaw War Champion title, then more work needs to go into training and consistency.”

The event closed with a vote of thanks from Yusuf Zainab, who appreciated everyone who played a role in making the competition a success. Afterwards, the participants took pictures, exchanged greetings, and celebrated their victory.
