DEFEATING DEPRESSION: Highlights and Lessons

By Ojo Deborah

Day two of NAPS week was tagged “Defeating Depression”. The event was held at the Rotunda, Psychology Hall, University of Ibadan. Depression is a pressing issue, and this topic focuses on addressing it.

The event, which was scheduled for 11:00am, commenced at exactly 11:30 a.m., following opening prayers and singing of anthems. The welcome address by the Vice President was a time used to express the significance of this event. The Vice President explained that the goal is that all attendees are equipped to face the world.

The event was inspirational with the speeches from the Speakers: Miss Olutayo Atilolaoluwa and Mr Olusegun Eyijare; and interactive games like “Raise your hand if” for all attendees, and a True/False game which involved six participants.

Evidence of the Baker/Baker Paradox also transpired when the players could not recall the name of a fellow player for a prize because they had gotten used to a nickname adopted during the game.

Attendees would not forget the deep and sharp sense of humor of Mr Olutayo as he encouraged them to embrace vulnerability and allow others to help them, as well as wise words from Miss Olutayo while she spoke about ways to help people battling depression without losing oneself.

The event would be incomplete without the sumptuous refreshments and love shared by sponsors in the form of items like beads, perfumes, food, clothing and so on.
