DON'T JUST SURVIVE THE SEMESTER: A STUDENT'S GUIDE TO STAYING HEALTHY
By Fawunmi Elizabeth
The beginning of a new semester often comes with excitement, new goals, and academic pressure. Students prepare for lectures, assignments, tests, and social activities, but one important aspect is often neglected: health. Many students enter a semester determined to succeed academically but end up sacrificing their physical and mental well-being in the process.
Surviving a semester should not mean living on stress, skipping meals, and sleeping only when there is no work left to do. True academic success requires a healthy body and a balanced mind.
1. Prioritize Your Physical Health
A student’s body is the foundation for academic performance. Eating balanced meals provides the energy needed for concentration and productivity. While fast food may seem convenient during busy periods, excessive consumption can affect energy levels and overall health. Including fruits, vegetables, proteins, and enough water in your diet can improve focus and reduce fatigue.
2. Exercise is another important part of student wellness. Physical activity does not always require a gym membership. Simple activities like walking, stretching, or participating in sports can improve mood, reduce stress, and keep the body active.
3. Protect your mental health
Academic pressure can become overwhelming when students feel they must handle everything alone. Stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion are common challenges among students. Learning to manage time effectively, setting realistic goals, and taking short breaks can prevent burnout.
4. Students should also create time for activities that bring joy, such as spending time with friends, engaging in hobbies, or practicing relaxation techniques. Seeking support from trusted friends, family members, or professionals when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness.
5. Develop Healthy Academic Habits
Many students wait until examinations are close before studying seriously. This habit often leads to unnecessary stress. Creating a study schedule, attending lectures regularly, and reviewing materials gradually can make academic tasks more manageable.
A healthy semester is not about doing less; it is about doing things in a way that protects your well-being while achieving your goals.
A successful semester by the ability to maintain good health throughout the journey while managing grades. Students should remember that their health is an investment. By taking care of the body and mind, they can do more than survive the semester, they can truly thrive.
