MENTAL HEALTH SEROTONIN: MOOD STABILIZER

By VICTORIA ADEUSI

Do you know you can always be happy? Though there are other causes attached to depression, over time, several researchers have made it clear that low levels of serotonin are associated with depression.

Serotonin is a chemical that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and throughout the human body. Serotonin has many functions in different areas of the body which include mood, sleep, digestion, nausea, wound healing, bone health, blood clotting, and sexual desire.

Of the number of functions that serotonin does is the regulation of the mood. It is most times called the body's natural “feel good” chemical.

When it is at normal levels, you feel more focused, emotionally stable, happier, and calmer. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression

Increasing your level of serotonin reduces depression and makes you happier.

Here are the tips to increase the level of serotonin:

● Eating more tryptophan-containing food, e.g. Eggs, cheese, pineapples, salmon, Turkey, etc

● Getting more sunlight

● Taking certain supplements

● Getting more exercise and lowering your stress level
