Nigeria's Educational System, A Dream Killer!

With anticipation, we welcomed a new session. For Freshers, it was probably a dream come true to be a part of the University system finally. Well, we might probably not say the same about some satellites. However, the dawn of a new session filled the air as Freshers embarked on their journey into the University lifestyle. Oh! The sound of the start of tutorials brushing students' lips, particularly those of Freshers. Let's not leave out the joy of being a Finalist. Finalists, who figuratively have the number of days left in the University stuck in their heads.

While struggling to acclimate to our new levels with different emotions clouding our minds, the Academic Staff Union of University, particularly and generally referred to as ASUU, dropped a bomb on Nigeria's academic system, informing us about their plan to embark on an indefinite strike.

It has been reported that ASUU demands that the Federal Government enforce the Memorandum of Action signed with the union last year. However, with the government yet to make any public move, ASUU voted to embark on a one-month warning strike to press home its demands from the government. This was made official on the 14th of February, 2022.

The news has been quite displeasing in students' ears as they are yet to get over the one year lost to Covid 19. "We just asked to attend college and graduate at an appropriate time!" To Federal Government, that obviously seems too much to ask. Students are frustrated and tired of spending more than the speculated time in the University system. How far does the Federal Government want to go with this?

While many Nigerians have mercilessly blamed ASUU for taking the upcoming election as an opportunity to ambush Federal Government, it has been reported that the Federal Government refuses to put up with their part of the deal, AGAIN.

Sadly, while we wait for this one-month warning strike to pass by, we desperately hope for no extension as we mourn the destruction of Nigeria's educational system.
