NPHR APPROVES ₦170,000 FOR STEEZE ON SHORTS (SOS) 3.0, PUSHES FOR STANDALONE DEPARTMENTAL DINNER

The NAPS House of Representatives (NPHR), University of Ibadan, has approved the sum of ₦170,000 as the Department of Psychology’s contribution to the forthcoming Steeze on Shorts 3.0 (SOS 3.0), following revisions to the proposed budget, while members also pushed for the revival of a standalone departmental dinner.

The sitting, held at Room 036 on Thursday, August 7, 2026, commenced at exactly 12:03 PM, with the minutes of the previous meeting read and subsequently adopted after motions were moved and seconded by members of the House. The Executive President and Deputy Speaker also tendered apologies for their late arrival.

The spotlight quickly fell on the Social Committee Chairman, Temi Faniran, who presented the initial proposal for Steeze on Shorts (SOS) 3.0, scheduled for September 12, with an original total price tag of ₦693,000 to be split among 3 participating departments, and the Faculty of The Social Sciences leaving the Department of Psychology with a ₦173,250 commitment.

House members pushed back on several line items, questioning the high ₦400,000 cost allocated for sound and three DJs, as well as the lack of planned refreshments beyond sachet water.

Faniran defended the multi-DJ lineup as an essential measure against boredom and affirmed that SOS remains a vital brand for psychology’s social scene, assuring the House that a dedicated sound engineer was on standby to prevent technical glitches.

The house, however, mandated adjustments that reduced fuel costs from ₦1,500 to ₦1,300 per liter and eliminated disposable cup allocations, bringing the total inter-departmental budget down to ₦689,750 and trimming Psychology’s contribution to a final approved figure of ₦170,000.

Earlier in the sitting, the assembly also approved the budget for the Test ’n’ Testing (TNT) Picnic despite concerns over low publicity and tight finances, which required a ₦20,000 contribution from each level's Board of Class Representatives alongside a reduced miscellaneous fund of ₦6,900.

The proposal, however, generated further discussion as the Speaker and Hon. Damilola advocated for the Psychology Department to organise a standalone departmental dinner, noting that the event has always been merged for some time, now. They argued that concerns about student apathy and cost should not continually prevent the department from holding its own dinner. The Social Committee Chairman subsequently agreed to look into the possibility of organising a separate departmental dinner.

Rounding off the session under Any Other Business, the decline in non-social events, where the NAPS President cited national security risks for canceling a planned field trip and urged students to use feedback links, while assuring NAPSITES that efforts were ongoing to facilitate internship placements for students and expressed optimism that the initiative would be implemented before the end of the current semester.

With the ratification of the Constitution Amendment Committee postponed due to absence of a considerable number of the committee members, the sitting officially adjourned at 3:23 PM.
