NPHR UPHOLDS LAW WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOUR: SANCTIONS, IMPEACHMENT, JUSTIFICATION

In every institution or organisation, there exist established rules and regulations that guide conduct. These laws are expected to be upheld by all, as no individual is above them.

The House sitting held on April 24, 2026, attended by Honourable members, members of the Executive Council, Pressman, and Congress men, was one that underscored both the enforcement of discipline and the challenges of maintaining it.

The legislative body is vested with the authority to make decisions binding on all NAPSITES. It is therefore imperative that the House upholds the highest standards of discipline and adherence to due process.

However, a striking irony emerges when one who is entrusted with the responsibility of enforcing these laws within the House becomes the leading defaulter himself. A major point of concern was the conduct of the Chief Whip, who was called to account for lapses in the execution of his duties. Found wanting, he was consequently fined and suspended.

In his response, the Chief Whip adopted a defensive stance, questioning certain rulings of the Speaker without sufficient clarity or accountability. While it is not inherently wrong for a leader to explain or justify their actions, such justifications must be delivered with the mannerisms and courtesy befitting the chamber.

Following further deliberation, the Speaker reviewed the initial verdict, resulting in a reduction of the imposed fine to ₦3,000.

Additionally, members of the Executive Council who were absent without prior communication were queried. Notably, the Financial Secretary and the Sports Director were absent. The latter was directed to submit a formal letter of apology to the House, as their absence hindered deliberations on key agenda items. However, explanations provided by the President were taken into consideration.

A significant highlight of the sitting was the impeachment of a 100-level Honourable member, Miss Muochukwuneke Ifunaya. The impeachment stemmed from negligence in clarifying and adhering to a constitutional provision prohibiting the simultaneous holding of positions as both a Pressman and a member of the House. The failure to properly relinquish one role before assuming another was deemed a violation of the law, ultimately leading to her removal from office. This action serves as a deterrent to others and reinforces the importance of strict compliance with institutional regulations.

As the fourth estate of the realm, the Press remains committed to its obligation of transparency. It is our duty to highlight the interplay of power and ensure the justice system of the department remains accountable to every student. The justice enforced during this sitting is a standard we hope to see sustained. When the law is upheld without fear or favor, the integrity of our governmental arms is preserved, and the Union thrives.
