STAY SAFE: More Than A Cliché

The early hours of Sunday, 17th October 2021 was rocked with the sad news of the death of a final year student of History, University of Ibadan. The victim, Adegoke Adebayo was said to be killed by suspected armed robbers after being relieved of his mobile phone at Preboye's world complex at about 9 pm to 10 pm on Saturday, 16th October 2021.

Agbowo, popularly recognized as a residential area for students of the University of Ibadan, is known to be a den of thieves and people of questionable character. Earlier this session, the governor of Oyo State, Gov. Seyi Makinde, took some measures to ensure the comfort of the students living in the area. However, it seems that these efforts need to be intensified.

In the late evening of this same day, another tragedy struck as Oluwaseun Adeyemo, a 200 level student of Microbiology was reportedly hit by a speeding car on her way to school. She was reportedly rushed to the University clinic (Jaja), however, she gave up the ghost before she could be attended to. It is important to note that the road to the school gate is a very busy one and it takes the grace of God, sharp instincts, and full alertness to cross the road without a scratch from Micra drivers or even private cars. Sadly, the road cannot boast of traffic lights to control the traffic, and traffic wardens manning the road are sometimes just lucky to avoid being hit themselves by uncultured taxi drivers.

The cliché “stay safe” was commonly used during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic to warn family and friends to steer clear of risks of contracting the COVID-19 disease. However, this phrase has proven to be more than a cliché with the recent happenings in the University of Ibadan. It is now a call to action, vigilance, and safety. Therefore, dear
