
Stored but Forgotten: The Science of Memory Retention and Retrieval

Have you ever wondered why it can be difficult to recall information you were certain you had stored? Memory, the process of retaining knowledge over time, plays a crucial role in shaping our actions and decisions. It is a fundamental component of human learning and the broader process of remembrance.
According to psychologists, memory operates through three key stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval.
Memory can be classified into three types: sensory, short-term, and long-term memory. Sensory memory is the earliest and most fleeting stage, holding information, such as sights, sounds, or smells, for only a few seconds. Short-term memory retains information for approximately 20–30 seconds, unless it is actively processed and transferred into long-term memory. Long-term memory, on the other hand, has the capacity to store information for extended periods, sometimes indefinitely.
Difficulties in recalling information are often linked to psychological factors such as retroactive and proactive interference. Retroactive interference occurs when newly acquired information disrupts the ability to retrieve previously learned material. In contrast, proactive interference happens when older information interferes with the recall of new information.
In addition to these, external factors such as sleep deprivation, emotional state, stress, age, and overall health can significantly affect memory retrieval.
For students, the ability to effectively retrieve stored information, especially from lectures is essential for academic success. This can be improved by adopting healthy habits such as getting adequate rest, engaging in regular physical exercise, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and nutrients. Seeking medical attention when necessary should also not be overlooked.
