THE INCOMPETENCE OF NAPS’ GEN SEC THROUGH THE ROOF: A NIGHTMARE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE?

It’s no news that competence is quite essential in leadership, and the NAPS is no exception. The General Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Psychology Students (NAPSUI), Mr. Omowole Praise, missed that class. While the 8th NPHR sitting started quite well, the General Secretary displayed his professional skills leaving everyone, including his fellow executives, disappointed, irritated, and angry.

The whole drama started when the President of the association was called upon to present the NAPS week budget in the absentia of Mr. Omowole. With utmost irritation, the President clarified that the budget shared between the Honourables and everyone present at the sitting was inaccurate. He was unaware that such a particular budget was shared, as corrections were made to such a document, and Mr. Omowole was clearly instructed to send out the edited document.

“I was not expecting to see this like this... I don’t know why this document was submitted to the clerk...”

While everyone was trying to look more composed than surprised, the president went ahead to inform the House how ‘Incompetent’ the Gen Sec has been as he mainly acts against the instruction of the President. Painfully, he further mentioned that the Gen Sec argues with him every time and does as he wishes, and he was pretty sure that Mr. Omowole sent the wrong document on purpose. The president also mentioned that Mr. Omowole was informed that he was supposed to present the NAPS week budget but refused. Did I forget that this ‘inaccurate’ document had the President's signature on it? Yep, it did, and the President clarified that he did not approve his signature on this document.

While Mr. Omowole had done an incredible job at showing little to no regard for the President, he had proven himself to be ‘down on one’s luck’ to all NAPSITES who saw him fit as the best candidate for the position of the General Secretary. He had clearly taken an interest in NAPSITES as a joker, but that’s not even the fun fact. In his illusion, he has seen himself as a fit for the position of the association president. At this point, one must think this is a comedy show!

It is important to note that leadership is not simply about popularity or a willingness to take on responsibilities. Influential leaders must possess various skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, make decisions, and inspire others to action. They must also be able to balance competing interests and navigate complex situations with tact and diplomacy.

In the case of Mr. Omowole, it appears that he is lacking in some of these critical areas. His behavior towards the President suggests a lack of respect and cooperation, while his failure to submit an accurate budget demonstrates a lack of attention to detail and organizational skills. These qualities are essential for any leader, and without them, Mr. Omowole's ability to effectively lead the association is called into question.
