UI'SU SWEARS IN NEW EXECUTIVES AS OUTGOING PRESIDENT UNVEILS VISION 2030 AT HANDOVER CEREMONY

The newly elected executives of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) were officially sworn in on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, marking the beginning of a new administration led by Adeboye Temidayo Sewanu. The inauguration ceremony, which commenced at 11:47 a.m, also featured the swearing-in of members of the University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council (UISRC).

In his handover speech, the outgoing UISU President, Covenant Odedele, expressed gratitude to the university management for their continuous support and parental guidance in addressing students’ concerns. He charged the incoming executives, popularly known as the Diligence Team, to remain committed, prudent in decision-making, and cautious of public opinion.

Odedele further advised them to embrace intellectual unionism, stressing that protest actions such as boycotts should only be employed as a last resort.

Following his remarks, he unveiled the UISU Vision 2030 — a five-year strategic plan aimed at guiding the union’s operations and objectives from 2026 to 2030, promising to make the document accessible to the student body.

In his inaugural address, President Adeboye Temidayo Sewanu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to integrity, accountability, and inclusiveness. He highlighted pressing issues affecting students, including unstable electricity supply, accommodation challenges, and administrative delays affecting postgraduate students.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed the approval of a 12-megawatt electricity project aimed at improving power supply across the university and the College of Medicine, noting that it is expected to be completed within 12 months.

On accommodation, the Vice-Chancellor lamented the poor condition of some halls of residence and explained the challenges surrounding renovation efforts, including funding constraints and the university’s academic calendar.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Ademola Lewis, in his opening remarks, urged the new executives to embrace cooperation with university management, describing modern students’ unionism as one of strategic engagement rather than confrontation. He emphasized respect for institutional hierarchy and cited collaborative achievements in other universities as a model for progress, assuring that with cooperation, the university’s halls of residence would be improved.

The ceremony concluded with commendations for the outgoing administration, particularly for the introduction of the UISU Vision 2030, which the university management pledged to support.
