UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN OPENS VICE-CHANCELLOR APPLICATION PROCESS AMID PAST SELECTION CONCERNS

The University of Ibadan has begun the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor ahead of the expiration of Prof. Kayode Adebowale’s tenure on November 1, 2026.

The announcement was made by the Registrar, Ganiyu Saliu, in a notice issued on April 16, formally declaring the position vacant from the stated date and signalling the start of the selection process.

The move has revived memories of the university’s last Vice-Chancellor appointment, which was marred by controversy. After the office became vacant on December 1, 2020, delays and disputes led to the dissolution of the Governing Council and the inauguration of a new council chaired by John Odigie-Oyegun in April 2021 to restart the process. Prof. Kayode Adebowale was eventually appointed on October 14, 2021, for a single five-year term.

With another transition underway, attention is on whether the university can avoid a repeat of past challenges.

The university outlined the criteria for applicants: candidates must not be older than 65-years by November 1, 2026, and must have at least ten years’ experience as a Professor. Proven leadership in academic and administrative roles, integrity, and strong national and international standing are also required.

Applicants are further expected to demonstrate a clear vision for the university, the ability to attract funding, and sound physical and mental health.

As the process begins, anticipation is building within the university community over who will emerge as the next Vice-Chancellor.
